The only way to learn mathematics is to monitor the surroundings. Without recognizing it we use Mathematical skills every day. The laws of mathematics govern everything around us. Math is a natural way to organize and think. From setting the alarm to the setting of timer in microwave and oven to measure the ingredients and fabric. To acquaint the students with the true nature of calculations, the school provides a collaborative and challenging platform. A well-resourced laboratory aims to expand the visions of young mathematicians. The Omnipresence of calculations itself is a wonder!

From Breakfast to Bedtime

The crispy buttered square bread slices, Oval shaped boiled eggs, triangle Parathas, rotis in shape of a circle, diamond shape cut of capsicums, onions, Chillies, long grained rice, well symmetrical green leaves enhance the look on the table. Kitchen itself is a three-dimensional learning for shapes like cubes, spheres, and rectangular prisms. Geometry incorporates an understanding of the volumes of solids, so baking a three -tiered cake is simplified.

Mathematical Problem-Solving

Mathematical Skills matter in everyday life-unlocking the magic of numbers. Math is the secret ingredient to making life smoother and logical. Our daily existence is Math right from early morning walk on a straight road to climbing of the steps, working on a laptop. Numbers verify their significance at every step. Math makes sure we get the right answers. Math is a problem-solving sidekick. Figuring out the space and consumption of food and space in the refrigerator appears like a mystery.

Math in Personal Finance

Algebra and Geometry help to maintain personal finance. It helps to manage one’s money, saving and investing. It includes budgeting, mortgages, investments, insurance. Applied mathematics helps to deal with finances. Mental arithmetic is required for financial management. Balancing lifestyles costs with regular saving is the toughest part of personal finance. So, proper calculations help in one’s savings and investment.

Examples and Uses of Mathematics in Daily Life

Math matters in everyday life. Balancing the checkbook, shopping for the best price, figuring out daily travel expenses, understanding loans for cars, education, food.
Numeracy skills are used in everyday life. Daily activities like reading the time, cooking, using mobile phones, reading a map, and understanding timetable, changing passwords, page numbers involve daily mathematical skills.

Grocery Shopping

Math is rocking our world- grocery shopping becomes easier even for a labourer, isn’t it a surprise that even a daily wage worker is able to calculate on fingers and budgets his daily and monthly expenses well sans paper. At Mayoor School a special market scene is set up by primary students where the students act as sellers and customers to buy, sell, and calculate their transactions. The human body itself is a miracle where all addition and subtraction can be done without formal education.

Home Improvement

Home is embellished in style by playing puzzles and quizzes with sofas, shelves, and tables. Furniture is arranged like a wonderland. Math is Mystical. The creative room for our little learners looks colourful with toy sets, kitchen sets, doll sets, Lego, and block sets.

Cooking and Baking

Math is used in many aspects of cooking and baking. It helps to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit (and vice versa), helps to convert quantities of ingredients provided by recipe and to work on cooking time. A child in school learns to bake in different shapes and learn about the shapes.

Many activities like preparing lemonade by adding tablespoons of sugar and measuring proper proportions to make their own food like preparing salad, pudding, and cake. It makes the child learn about universal measurements.

Navigation and Travel Planning

Conversions charts make cooking interesting and travelling adventurous by studying maps like Vasco da Gama and Christoper Columbus. While travelling, a map is a friend and protector. How we observe the distance and the ways to cover it diligently.

Health and Nutrition: Nutritious diet is vital for a child’s growth and if a child is taught to be concerned about one’s health, math plays a big role. The teaching of BODY MASS INDEX makes the child aware of his/her health. Workshops on Nutrition have a positive effect on children as they improve children’s knowledge and behaviour related to food. Pre-primary students are provided with special diet charts recommending daily amounts of calories, carbohydrates, proteins, calcium.

Gardening

How much water is needed for our plants in the garden, the length of the plants and leaves are measured, the trimming and pruning of the hedges and bushes, the gardeners calculate the depth of the soil and length and width of the flower beds for proper growth. The Horticulture club of our School enriches the knowledge of the students by generating a kitchen garden on the school premises for hands-on learning.

Technology

In this Tech savvy world, students have an accessibility to Adobe Creative Coud, Photoshop, Illustrator, Microsoft Office Suite, System Analysis System, Maple. They are trained in drone-making, robotics, digital apps, wi-fi codes, passwords which boost the world of mathematical technology. Regular workshops are conducted for young learners.

Time Management

Simple math is used to improve Time Management. One learns to manage the necessities and luxuries. Teaching time in math is a lifelong learning and is a continuous process, so, numbers are important. Students in school life learn to measure and read time on clock and watches which help them to give appropriate time to all subjects, how to use time productively in a day and to divide time according to one’s priorities. Students learn to combat procrastination and lack of organization. Time management helps students to improve self-discipline.

Foundation of other subjects

Mathematics is the foundation of other subjects; no subject is complete without Math. Math is intricately attached to science, social science, technology, Literature. It helps to understand poetry better by understanding the meter, lines in poetry. It helps to review charts and graphs in history to measure the height of a city from sea level.

Recreational Sports

The sports arena of the school speaks about its vast opportunities, it also focuses on healthy team spirit, solidarity, and sportsmanship by aligning the students with the world around. Math is inevitable in Games and sports-playing the card games require the skill of addition and subtraction. Puzzles and brainteasers require Math to solve. Learning Math through sports creates interest in students as a recreation math. Chess Club in school makes the learners more inquisitive and sharper.

Music and Dancing

Performing Arts Department widens students’ perception about the world around. The dance steps are taught in different geometrical patterns-Squares, parallel lines, and circles. So many dance techniques use algebra, patterning, group formations, sequences, and variations. Dance uses numerical, mapping, other shapes, and formations.  Students are taught to play instruments from counting exercise to the holding of drumsticks, open hand exercise, playing beats on counts.

Yoga and exercising

Math and geometry hold a significant place in yoga movements. Geometry is used in yoga postures. This allows us to teach kids math using yoga. Yoga facilitates in holistic growth of its learners, special yoga classes are held in the morning in the lap of nature using geometry angles, shapes, functions, and transformations in poses. Learning math through yoga enriches students’ understanding of concepts.

Banking and Finance

The jingling of coins attracts even a toddler. Parents teach their young ones to save money in toy banks and then use it for themselves.  School encourages life-long ethics of saving by teaching applied Math in Play way method at Primary Level by pictorial, graphical representations. Special programmes are initiated to teach the learners the life lesson that there is something more to do with money other than spending it.

Math Enriches Our Understanding of the World

This enigmatic universe is extremely flamboyant and is designed with spectacular shapes, distinct sizes and patterns that makes the interpretation of Math sophisticated. Great God like PAN created a symphonic flute from a reed. Special workshops are held on how to invent new objects from the natural world itself. Nature is a massive recycling unit.

Patterns in Nature

Euclid said, ‘The laws of nature are but the mathematical thoughts of God’. A wonder to human eyes that all creatures have different outlines and dimensions. A nature walk in the premises of School flower garden gives gateway to the students to reflect about discrete proportions of objects felt all around. The shape of a Rose flower is different from aster. The shape of guava leaf is different from Mango and Lemon leaves. The length of the hedges, the proportions of a climber. Students are taught that nature lives in distinctive patterns.

Music and Art

Student need to understand that Mathematics is highly prized that it lives in music and art too. The school provides training under the able guidance of connoisseurs of music. Great Greek mathematician Pythagoras played The Greek Lyre – he identified the physics of intervals, and proper distances between notes.

‘There is geometry in the humming of the strings, there is music in the spacing of the spheres.’

Rightly quoted by Pythagoras. The discoverer of E=MC2 played violon. Using specific ratios can help create a more realistic art. Mandala art uses mathematical phenomenon such as shapes, position symmetry, proportion, and measurement of lines in Mandala art. The Geometric mandala, Flower mandala. Doodling presentations help students to discover math concepts.
